about

THANK YOU FOR YOUR EXTREME PATIENCE regarding the extreme delay to this release. Blown sideways by a major studio flood and then hit by the pandemic, we decided to put this release on hold. We are working to release this album in 2024 - IT WILL SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY. Thank you for your kind words and support.

Before I went to jazz school I'd taught myself to play and sing a whole bunch of folk pop country and soul and blues revivalist songs that were big in the 60s. Joni, Janis, Nina, Dylan, Baez, June, Dolly, Townes, Lennon, Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens, Redding, Mayfield, Neil Young, intergenerational Guthries, etc et al, all read off the charts left in the bottom of my neighbour's dad's guitar case. Reading all those funky lyrics got me reading a whole lot of funky biographies... and before long I'd be out playing my guitar in the Brisbane Botanical gardens as a teen blowing off an afternoon of school imagining myself not only among my idols, all freak-haired and hippied, but actually being them; the swagger, the fearlessness, the power of being at the vanguard of social change, the swelling of the heart, and the fun of it all!

That was more than twenty-five years ago. Recently I started re-visiting all of those songs and discovering and playing with their ability to change shape and meaning when delivered with subtle awareness and acknowledgement of a global consciousness hardly yet dreamt up of back in the day.

In April 2019 I went into the private studio of a very dear old friend, Joss Rigby (with whom I share a birthday!) over four nights to record all of these old "songs from the start" just as I like them - playfully, happily accidental, improvisatory, leaning on breath and mood and hard-won mastery to create a unique recording at what is turning out to be a very pivotal moment in my life as an artist.

A selection of guitars with significant meaning to me have been be a part of the journey, including my old Yamaha nylon string, the fabled 1958 "two-moon" parlour guitar that Gamilaroi elder Uncle Bobby Weatherall helped me buy, and the exceptional steel string that Brisbane-based luthier Luke Kallquist made for me.

The album will be supplied to campaign supporters via Bandcamp.

I am pressing a *LIMITED* number of CDs and VINYL which will feature original artwork - please buy a physical copy of the album, they are bona fide collector's items. I am deliberately creating original artwork on each piece because I don’t think anything I create should contribute to the disposable culture of our modern world. Albums are treasures!

I'm also going to make a limited run of zines featuring old photos and things from those teenage years plus a contemporary line drawing to accompany each song's modern take.

I'll be putting out the record with a solo tour featuring house concerts and other fun things including a few festivals down the track.

This is a very special project to me. Thank you for being a part of it, for being a part of my journey, and for continuing to support me as an artist. Most of my fans I have met personally and I feel a responsibility to deliver on my word. I'm fully independent. Your support and understanding keeps me rolling on the tough days, and there have been some pretty tough days. Thank you.
